We continue our “walkabout” this week with the intrepid Oom Willem van den Berg and his almost-100-year-old journey up the East Coast of Africa, all captured on 16mm film and recently digitised. Last week, we set off with Oom Willem van den Berg from Levubu on his now almost 100-year-old journey up the east coast of Africa. Back then, the adventurous Oom Willem captured his travels on 16 mm film – one of the few people in the country able to do so at the time. We have since digitised his “home movies”, and, in the absence of sound and subtitles, we are trying to retrace his steps.

We kick off Oom Willem’s tour with a trip up the East Coast of Africa. The movie clip, however, starts a little closer to home, with our intrepid tourists waiting for a train at a dusty station. Try as we might, we could not ascertain which station it is. Perhaps our local sleuths can shed more light on this.

We invite all our readers to embark on a tour with us that will last several months. During this tour, we will visit several towns and cities in our country and sail up the east coast of Africa. Some of the more exotic locations we will visit include Zanzibar, the Swiss Alps and Vienna. We will be driving really old cars and visiting even older sites.

A short email received two weeks ago prompted the search for graves. Perhaps the relatively slow weekend, with little happening, contributed to the decision to explore the final resting place of two missionaries, René Cuénod and his wife, Marguerite.

For the Zoutpansberger’s 15^th photo treasure hunt, we decided to cast the net a little wider over the region’s rich cultural heritage. The correct answer to the photo clue given was that of Louis Trichardt’s oldest Muslim mosque, the Louis Trichardt Town Masjid in Kruger Street. The mosque has its origins with the first Muslim families who moved into the Zoutpansberg in the late 1800s, around the same time as the establishment of the town of Louis Trichardt in 1899.
