WATCH: Time has come to say goodbye to Oom Willem and Tannie Jo

History: 27 September 2025

This week, we wrap up our weekly travels with Oom Willem van den Berg. Over the past 18 weeks, we have joined the adventurous Oom Willem on his almost 100-year-old escapades, which were captured on 16 mm film. We travelled with him and his wife, Tannie Jo, across the length and breadth of South Africa and even accompanied them on a trip up the east coast of Africa and into Europe. But for now, our journey must end with two bonus reels.

Last week, we set off with Oom Willem van den Berg from Levubu on his now almost 100-year-old journey up the east coast of Africa. Back then, the adventurous Oom Willem captured his travels on 16 mm film – one of the few people in the country able to do so at the time. We have since digitised his “home movies”, and, in the absence of sound and subtitles, we are trying to retrace his steps.

We kick off Oom Willem’s tour with a trip up the East Coast of Africa. The movie clip, however, starts a little closer to home, with our intrepid tourists waiting for a train at a dusty station. Try as we might, we could not ascertain which station it is. Perhaps our local sleuths can shed more light on this.

A hunt for Swiss missionaries' graves reveals more than just pictures

History: 16 December 2023 By Anton van Zyl

A short email received two weeks ago prompted the search for graves. Perhaps the relatively slow weekend, with little happening, contributed to the decision to explore the final resting place of two missionaries, René Cuénod and his wife, Marguerite.

Louis Trichardt Town's Masjid an historic place of prayer

History: 21 October 2023 By Andries van Zyl

For the Zoutpansberger’s 15th photo treasure hunt, we decided to cast the net a little wider over the region’s rich cultural heritage. The correct answer to the photo clue given was that of Louis Trichardt’s oldest Muslim mosque, the Louis Trichardt Town Masjid in Kruger Street. The mosque has its origins with the first Muslim families who moved into the Zoutpansberg in the late 1800s, around the same time as the establishment of the town of Louis Trichardt in 1899.

Baie geluk aan Chené Buys, wie se naam as wenner getrek is. Sy wen ons R300 prysgeld.
