In a heart-warming celebration of community spirit and resilience, Air Force Base Makhado held its annual Cancer Awareness Charity Golf Day on the base’s 38th anniversary on Friday, 10 October. The event not only marked a significant milestone for the base but also aimed to raise funds and awareness for cancer care in the region, with the Makhado Care Group as the main beneficiary.

The golf day, held at the scenic Soutpansberg Golf Club, attracted numerous participants and sponsors dedicated to supporting cancer-awareness initiatives. Thanks to the generosity of sponsors, including INCOMAR, SAAB Aerospace, GKN, Denel Aviation, the CSIR, and Midnite Aerospace Solutions, the event raised an impressive R30,000, which will significantly aid the Makhado Care Group in its ongoing efforts to support cancer patients and their families in the community.

Highlights of the day included a stunning flypast by a 2 Squadron Gripen to start the proceedings, as well as a moving speech delivered by Jernay McLeod, a director on the Makhado Care Group management committee. Jernay spoke passionately about the challenges faced by cancer patients and the vital role that community support plays in their journey. Her heartfelt words resonated with attendees, reminding everyone of the importance of compassion and collective action in the fight against cancer.

The collaboration with Soutpansberg Golf Club was instrumental in the day’s success, providing an excellent venue for participants to enjoy a day of golf while contributing to a worthy cause. The atmosphere was further enhanced by DJ Jonty, who provided all the sound and media for the day. It was filled with camaraderie as players came together not just for the love of the game but also for a shared commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of those affected by cancer.

As Air Force Base Makhado celebrates 38 years of service, this charity golf day stands as a testament to the base’s ongoing dedication to community welfare. The funds raised will go a long way in supporting the invaluable work of the Makhado Care Group, ensuring that cancer patients receive the care and support they need.

The golf day was not just a fundraiser; it was a celebration of hope, unity, and the spirit of giving that defines the Makhado community. As participants left the course, they carried with them not only memories of a great day on the greens but also a renewed commitment to stand together in the face of cancer.
