This past weekend, the Louis Trichardt Cricket Club came up against the University of Limpopo in a double-header during the third round of the Limpopo T20 League at the Louis Trichardt Oval. They ended up having to share the spoils on Sunday, 5 October, bouncing back from a tough first match to claim a massive victory in the second clash.
In the first game of the day, the University of Limpopo’s bowlers dominated. Louis Trichardt won the toss and elected to bat first. However, good, disciplined bowling from the university side meant their innings faltered, and Louis Trichardt were bowled out for just 80 runs in the 16th over. The top batsmen were AJ Fourie (a brisk 20 runs off 12 balls) and Craig Viljoen (15 off 13 balls).
The university chased down the target quickly, showing great intent to knock off the runs in the 11th over, winning by eight wickets. For Louis Trichardt, the wicket-takers were Gerhardus Fourie (1/10 in 2 overs) and Craig Viljoen (1/19 in 4 overs).
Louis Trichardt made a magnificent comeback in the second game of the day. The team’s batsmen delivered, backed by a clinical bowling performance.
The University of Limpopo won the toss and opted to field. This time, the Louis Trichardt openers put their foot down, scoring freely to build a massive total. Phenomenal batting saw both Craig Viljoen (69) and Gerhardus Fourie (53) score brilliant half-centuries, and Louis Trichardt finished their 20 overs on a commanding 187 runs.
The team carried their batting momentum into the field and delivered a superb bowling display, taking crucial early wickets, including a Man-of-the-Match performance by Craig Viljoen, who took three wickets for just 15 runs in four overs.
The rest of the bowlers chipped in to dismantle the university line-up, with Gerhardus Fourie and Tshivhase Phindulo both taking two wickets each. In the end, Louis Trichardt restricted the University of Limpopo to only 100 runs for nine wickets, securing an 87-run victory.
Louis Trichardt’s next clashes in the provincial T20 league are scheduled for 19 October, when they will face the Giyani Cricket Club at home in both a morning and an afternoon match.
